What We Learn to Work Around

Coffee and autumn flowers

I'm planning for Thanksgiving, as I always am this time of year. I'm making a few changes. I love entertaining, and I especially love sitting down at the table my daughter creates for us to gather around. This Thanksgiving, I'm moving the dining inside for a couple of reasons. First, the mosquitoes. Second, we're expecting quite a crowd this year.

So I'm taking our family room, which opens to the kitchen, moving the furniture out for the day, and setting up a dining room there. I don't want my guests to become the mosquitoes' Thanksgiving feast.

The mosquitoes have also kept me from enjoying my front porch and most of the backyard this summer. Dinners outside, evenings with sparkling water, time in the jacuzzi. I've started avoiding it all completely. What a waste.

I started wondering how many other things I've learned to work around.

I do this at work too. Something comes up that needs my immediate attention, and I move my whole day, sometimes my whole week, around it. I always find a way to get my own work done, but often at an incredible cost to me and my personal time. Working around things has become normal for me. Which brings me to the question: is there a better way?

I don't have the answer, but this week I'm going to look at the things I work around and ask whether I need to keep doing it.

I'm starting with the mosquitoes. Has anyone found something that actually works to get rid of them? If so, I would love to hear about it. I'd really love to be able to enjoy my backyard and front porch again.
